Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day at Burnaby Lake!

Did you know? Fall is a great time to visit Burnaby Lake and see the migratory birds that stop off to rest and refuel before continuing south on the Pacific Flyway to their winter destinations.

Guided Bird Outings #1 & #2

Join Lindz Marsh (Burnaby Lake Park Association Board Director), Peter Lypkie and other local birders as they share their knowledge and passion for birds while we wander through Burnaby Lake trails. We’ll listen for calls and songs, enjoy discussion on topics such as bird habitat and plumage, and share tips. With fall migration in full swing, this is a great time to see both seasonal visitors and local year-round species.

If possible, bring a pair of binoculars that will allow you to identify and enjoy distant birds easily.

Take part in the Regional Parks Snap & Share by reporting any fall visitors that we spot on the iNaturalist app. Learn more about BLPA events happening throughout the month of October here.

This year, World Migratory Bird Day is focused on the threat of light pollution. Artificial light is known to negatively affect many bird species and poses a significant threat to nocturnally migrating birds such as ducks, geese, plovers, sandpipers and songbirds, causing disorientation and collisions. Solutions to light pollution are available. More and more cities around the world are taking measures to dim building lights during migration phases. You can help by turning out the lights at night during spring and autumn.

Guided Outing #3 - Nature Walk using iNaturalist

Have you ever gone for a walk in the park and saw a pretty flower or cool bug and you wondered what it is? Join the BLPA for a guided nature walk using the iNaturalist app and get to know that nature around you! Participants will be taught how to use the app and add their observations and become a citizen scientist! Participants who sign up for the Snap & Share event can be eligible for prizes.

During October, the Burnaby Lake Park Association is participating in the egional Parks Snap & Share event. Park visitors are encouraged to use the iNaturalist app to add their observations to iNaturalist and become a citizen scientist! Participants who sign up for the Snap & Share event can be eligible for prizes.

What is iNaturalist?

It is one of the world’s most popular nature apps
It helps you identify the plants and animals around you.
It connects you to a community of over a million citizen scientists and naturalists who can help you learn more about nature!
By recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create research quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature.

Your BLPA Guide will review how to make an observation using the app and offer tips and tricks to get the best identification for your nature encounters and keep track of them.

After the introduction, we will go out into the park so you can use the app right away.

We welcome everyone, including people with disabilities, people who are Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC), and people who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+). We’ll be using Burnaby Lake Regional Park trails which are accessible to wheelchair-users, people who use mobility aids, or child strollers.

You are required to bring a face mask to the event to wear when physical distancing is not possible.

When you register, you will need to confirm that:

1. You are at least 16 years of age or older (or 12 years of age with an adult with you)

2. You will not attend if you have arrived from outside of Canada in the last 14 days

3. You will not attend if you do not feel well or have been exposed to a confirmed or clinical COVID-19 case in the last 14 days

4. You will bring your own mask, water, snacks, pen/pencil to sign any forms if needed

5. You will provide your email and telephone number in the event that contact tracing is required and handled by the provincial health authority. Your information will be handled according to the BLPA Privacy Policy. Click HERE for the Privacy Policy

What to bring checklist:

Mask (regardless if you are vaccinated or not)
Binoculars if you have them.
For the iNaturalist walk - a mobile device to take pictures at the park
The app downloaded and an iNaturalist account made - see details below
Please check the forecast and dress for the weather so you are safe and comfortable. Hats allow you to be handsfree, and sturdy waterproof shoes . If sunny, wear a comfortable hat, coverup, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.

LOCATION:

Burnaby Lake Nature House - we will meet in front of the Nature House. Look for signs

Please take note that if the weather is nice, the parking lot can be very busy. You may need to park along Piper Avenue or at Warner Loat Park right off of Winston which is a 450 m/5 minute walk to the Nature House. There are also train tracks crossing which may be blocked from time to time.

In order to be most efficient, PLEASE

DOWNLOAD the iNaturalist app to the device you will take to the park AND
CREATE AN ACCOUNT ahead of time.

There is no wi-fi at the park and depending on how your device is set up, you may need your Apple ID or Android Galaxy Store ID. While iNaturalist will be our focus for this event, you can also download the Merlin app to help you with bird ID. This is optional.
